Title 1 Program Improvement
The federal No Child Left Behind Act of 2001 requires states to implement a statewide accountability system measuring Adequate Yearly Progress (AYP) based on annual benchmarks or targets. Schools, districts and states must demonstrate significant improvement in student academic achievement.
All schools and local educational agencies (LEA’s) that do not make Adequate Yearly Progress (AYP) for two consecutive years in the same content area (English language arts or mathematics) school wide or for any numerically significant subgroup are identified as “Program Improvement” (PI). Identified districts and schools are responsible for implementing certain federal and state requirements during each year that they are in Program Improvement. In order to exit Program Improvement, a school or a district must make AYP for two consecutive years.
