Sierra Vista Celebrates Read Across America Week Under the Sea

Sierra Vista Elementary recently celebrated literacy and creativity during an engaging Read Across America Week, themed “Under the Sea.” Throughout the week, students participated in activities that brought reading and learning to life across the campus.

One highlight was the schoolwide Book Bracket, where classrooms read and compared books before voting on their favorites. Students eagerly discussed characters, settings, and story elements, building critical thinking skills while cheering on their top choices as the bracket narrowed to a final winner.

To connect literacy with math and science, students explored ocean-themed activities. They created bar graphs of their favorite sea creatures, practicing data collection and analysis while sharing their excitement for dolphins, sharks, sea turtles, and more. These lessons sparked meaningful conversations about marine life while strengthening both literacy and math skills.

Students also enjoyed special read-alouds with parents, volunteers, and local high school students, helping foster a shared love of reading across the community.

This memorable week was made possible by the dedication of Sierra Vista teachers and staff, especially the Reading Committee—Mrs. Kim, Mrs. Castaño, Mrs. Hsu, Ms. Vera, district librarian Aniko Tegtmeier, and many others—who created engaging experiences that inspired students to read, think, and explore.

Through events like Read Across America Week, students are reminded that reading can take them anywhere—even under the sea.
