Information regarding Aeries Breach and Resetting student passwords

Dear La Habra City School District Families,

The District is committed to protecting the confidentiality and security of our students’ information and that of their parents. We are writing to address a recent incident that involved your data. This notice explains the incident, measures that have been taken, and some steps you can take in response. 

Aeries, the District’s student information system provider, recently identified that customer information was compromised through the Parent Portal of numerous districts throughout the state, including the La Habra City School District (LHCSD).  The compromise was possible due to a bug in the Aeries software that has since been fixed. The compromised data includes: Student ID, Student Name, Parent Name, Address, Parent Portal Email Login, and a scrambled representation of passwords called a password hash.

Aeries also shared with customers that in addition to an ongoing investigation, arrests have been made, and law enforcement has filed charges against the alleged perpetrators.

We understand the importance of protecting the privacy and security of personal information, and we regret any inconvenience or concern this incident may cause. To help prevent something like this from happening again in the future, Aeries has installed a software patch to their servers that remedied the vulnerability that allowed the unauthorized individual to access their system. In order to avoid the possibility of unauthorized access to the accounts involved, we are requiring all account holders whose accounts were involved to change their passwords. Out of an abundance of caution LHCSD will:

  1. Send a password reset to the email address for every Parent Portal account beginning Tuesday, June 23 at 4:00 pm.
  2. Reset the password of every student Google account on Tuesday, June 23 at 5:00 pm.
  3. Post new student Google password to parents Parent Portal accounts on Tuesday, June 23  beginning at 5:00 pm.

We also recommend that parents and students change the password for any other accounts that used the same password, which may have been compromised through the Aeries Parent Portal.
