LSWP Triennial Assessment

La Habra City School Districts' wellness committee conducted an assessment to measure the effectiveness of our LHCSD Wellness Policy.  Assessments will be conducted every 3 years, at minimum, and goals will be established to strengthen our wellness policy and practices.  This assessment will be shared with LHCSD community members to understand shared progress on wellness efforts in the District.

SECTION 1: STRONG POLICIES AND ALIGNED PRACTICES

La Habra City School District is fully compliant with all the federal requirements that regulate school meals and competitive foods.  We also offer the National School Breakfast Program at all school sites, and implemented before school and second chance breakfast so all students have access to the breakfast program.

Qualified physical education teachers record and track the physical education instruction for all students and they promote a physically active lifestyle by encouraging students to participate in extracurricular activities.

The District Wellness Committee is comprised of District representatives, community partners, health professionals, physical education teachers and parents.  They meet at least 4 times a year to review policy and establish goals for district-wide nutrition and physical activity.

SECTION 2: CREATE PRACTICE IMPLEMENTATION PLAN

La Habra City School District promotes wellness at all sites and encourages healthy options when food is offered to students during classroom and/or school celebrations throughout the school day.  We identified through our assessment that our policy of selling or offering food or beverage to students outside of the NSLP, needs to be specified in our Wellness Policy (Smart Snacks) and then inform school administrators, teachers and school staff of our amended policy.   We will develop goals to update our Wellness Policy to reflect the USDA and State Smart Snacks Standards and provide training through our wellness committee representatives.

We also identified through our assessment that some of our schools offer opportunities for students to engage in physical activity before and after school, but not others.  To remedy this we shall develop an implementation plan for all schools to engage with students and their families to promote physical activity outside of the school day.

SECTION 3: UPDATE POLICIES

We identified through our assessment that there are twenty-six areas where we are fully implementing wellness practices in our schools that are either (a) not mentioned in our wellness policy, or (b) are vaguely mentioned in our policy.  Seven of these items are federal requirements.  To strengthen our wellness policy, our wellness committee will set goals during the first quarter of the 2022-23 school year to update our wellness policy during the next three years.

SECTION 4: OPPORTUNITIES FOR GROWTH

Overall, our LSWP compared favorably to the model policies as measured by the WellSAT 3.0.  However, there are several best practices that we have not yet implemented in our practices or written in our policy.  These include setting specific goals for updating policy based on results of the assessment and having a school wellness team at all nine of our school sites.  Our wellness committee will consider these issues during the 2022-23 school year and determine whether we have the resources and support to take on one of the goals for the 2023-24 school year.
