El Cerrito Students Lead the Way with STEM

At El Cerrito Elementary Computer Science Magnet, students are engaging in hands-on learning experiences that prepare them for the future. Through the after-school Epic Program, students are exploring dynamic STEM opportunities in Drone Soccer, robotics, and Esports.

In Drone Soccer, students build and fly drones in a high-energy game that teaches engineering and teamwork, guided by Mrs. Miller, Mrs. Green, and Ms. Williams. In our Vex robotics program, led by Ms. Barnett and Mrs. Mounce, students design, build, and code robots to complete challenges that develop their critical thinking and programming skills. Meanwhile, the Esports program, led by Mrs. Sanchez, strengthens collaboration and strategy as students compete in Mario Kart tournaments.

These programs were featured at our recent Epic Build Showcase, where students from TK through 6th grade shared their Lego Robotics projects using Lego Spike and Prime Robots. They demonstrated how they integrated reading, math, science, and social studies into their designs.

Our youngest students in TK and Kindergarten impressed families with Lego structures that featured layering and overlapping to represent dream houses and community landmarks, highlighting their early engineering skills.

Despite the rainy weather, El Cerrito families came out to support our young innovators, underscoring our school community’s commitment to inspiring the next generation of engineers, programmers, and problem-solvers.
