Principal's Message

Welcome to Las Positas Elementary School.

Sharon Hensley, Principal

Dear Las Positas Families,

You are about to begin Distance Learning this week, and I want to share with you my thoughts. There might be a fear that your child will fall behind and you feel the pressure to make sure all assignments are done. We are in this together! At Las Positas our teachers are outstanding. Our teachers are educators and care about the whole child. They are here for you all! You might think that you must have a 4 hour schedule for your child and have them sit in front of the computer. This is not healthy! Please ensure they have breaks and learning is broken up.

Our children are like sponges - they hear everything going on around them and feel our constant tension and anxiety. They have never experienced anything like this before. It may have seemed fun to be off of school at first, but reality will now happen as our Spring Break is over and they are supposed to return to school. Our kids will miss their friends, their teacher, the staff and the routine of going to school.

Over the coming weeks, you may see an increase in behavior issues with your kids. This is normal under these circumstances. If you do see changes and would like a phone call from one of us at school, please reach out. We are here to help you through this! Our school psychologist, Briana Ols, is here to help - as well as myself. Please reach out. It’s going to be a great challenge, but we can all do this together. Take time to play outside and go on walks. Bake cookies, paint, do a puzzle, play a board game. Kids need that social interaction. Start a book and read together.

Most importantly, don’t worry about your child regressing in school. Every single child is going through this - all ages! When we are back in the classroom, our teachers will meet each student where they are. Our teachers are experts at doing this! Our students’ emotional and mental health are more important right now than their academic skills. It is more important right now to stay home, stay well, and be safe! Just know we are here for you anytime and we love you! We miss you. Reach out anytime if you need anything.

Please follow us on Twitter @laspositaslions and join us in celebrating our wins!
