This year, Imperial Middle School proudly partnered with GEAR UP at Cal State Fullerton, bringing powerful, student-centered opportunities that inspire students to visualize and pursue their futures beyond middle school. Rooted in its mission to empower youth, GEAR UP has enriched our campus with hands-on experiences, academic support, and a consistent focus on college and career readiness.
Throughout the year, students participated in memorable field trips, including visits to Cal State Fullerton and SoFi Stadium, where they explored both college life and the world of sports and entertainment. They also heard from inspiring guest speakers, such as Dr. Victor Rios, who shared his journey of transformation through education, and NASA scientist Jocelyn Argueta, who reminded students that no dream is too big.
In addition to these exciting experiences, GEAR UP has provided critical academic support. This included 160 one-on-one academic advising sessions to help students set post-high school goals, more than 100 hours of tutoring in core subjects for 63 students, and college and career readiness workshops that equipped 69 students with essential planning skills.
What sets GEAR UP apart is its emphasis on connection and care. Through small-group workshops, personalized attention, and continuous encouragement, students felt supported every step of the way. As they prepare to transition into high school, they do so with confidence, clarity, and a stronger sense of purpose.
Thanks to GEAR UP, our students are not just imagining their futures—they’re building them. We are excited to continue this journey of growth and empowerment.
