Embracing Attendance Awareness Every Day Counts!

As we embark on this new year, we have the incredible opportunity of shaping young minds and preparing them for challenges and opportunities that lie ahead. One of the most fundamental ways we can achieve this is by emphasizing the importance of regular attendance. But what does chronic absenteeism mean?

In the state of California, chronic absenteeism is defined as missing 10 percent of the instructional days. This includes both excused and unexcused absences. It may seem like it would take a lot of absences, but in actuality, that’s missing 2 days of school a month! Prior to COVID, the District’s overall chronic absenteeism rate was 6.7%. However, in 2021-2022, the number jumped to 21.3%. Although there was an attempt to return to normalcy, attendance continues to be a significant area of challenge. What can you do?

  1. Emphasize the importance of coming to school everyday and how it can directly impact their learning and future opportunities.
  2. Establish a routine to include adequate sleep, a healthy breakfast and ample time to get ready for school.
  3. Communicate with your school. If your child needs to miss school due to illness or other unavoidable circumstances, inform the school promptly.

Attendance is a collective effort. Let’s show up for our students and for each other! For more resources, visit attendanceworks.org
