Early Learning Blooms with Math and Discovery

At LHCSD, our Transitional Kindergarten (TK) teachers are planting the seeds of math success by aligning the new Preschool Transitional Kindergarten Learning Foundations with Cognitively Guided Instruction (CGI) strategies. Early Learning TOSA Ms. Paty Perez Barba introduced the "three listens" strategy to support students in growing their mathematical thinking. Students hear a CGI story problem three times, gathering new "petals" of information with each listen and discussing their ideas with a partner after each round. By the final listen, students bloom with creative strategies to solve the problem, while Ms. Paty captures their thinking during the debrief. She and the teachers reflect together on how well the strategy has taken root and plan next steps to continue cultivating students’ math development.

Meanwhile, our School Readiness students are buzzing with excitement as they explore the world of insects! Under Ms. Adriana’s guidance, children and families are engaging in insect-themed activities like sorting, categorizing, and measuring. In the pretend play "entomologist lab," students apply their new insect knowledge while practicing important math skills and exploring the wonders of nature.

Early Learning teachers are also sowing the seeds of counting and cardinality through CGI-based hands-on activities. Students count objects, share their strategies with peers, and build their understanding of core math concepts while developing math vocabulary and collaboration skills.

Thanks to these intentional and engaging strategies, our youngest learners are growing their love for math and laying the foundation for a spring of success!
